Robusta: The Coffee From Africa

Robusta is believed to have originated in central and western Africa in the sub-Saharan region. They are of a lower grade compared to Arabica. However, these beans are easier to grow and maintain. Here is a look at some of the features of the Robusta coffee beans.

  • They grow at lower heights, are stronger and can fight diseases.
  • They offer a higher produce making them a more affordable option.
  • Vietnam is where this coffee is grown in the largest amount.
  • They have a stronger flavour, higher level of caffeine less of lipids and half the sugar level of Arabica.

The Other Differences Between The Two

Apart from the differences in their tastes, prices and geographical and climatic conditions, there are a few more differences between the two. Here is a look at a few of them.

  • While Robusta is more circular in shape, Arabica tends to be more oval.
  • The plant height of Arabica is 2.5 to 4.5 meters, whereas the robusta plants have a height of 4.5 to 6 meters.
  • Chlorogenic Acid or CGA is an important antioxidant in coffee and also helps repel insects.
  • The CGA level in Robusta is 7-10%, and it is 5.5-8% in Arabica.

Which One Should You Choose?

A lot depends on the coffee taste that you are looking for.

Although Arabica is synonymous with gourmet coffee and Robusta is considered inferior, that is not always true.

Best Robusta beans can give you coffee that tastes as good, or even better, than a lower level Arabica coffee. However, superior quality of Robusta isn’t always available as it is mixed with others to bring down the costs.

There are other coffee beans as well, such as the Bengal Coffee, and Liberian coffee. The Sierra Leonian coffee, and the coffea mogeneti, as well as the Congo coffee, are popular too, though they yet do not form a major part of the international exports.
